Dr. Sammy Banawan

Dr. Banawan completed his graduate school at the University of Georgia in their Clinical Psychology program. The UGA Clinical Psychology program was recognized in 1998 (his year of entry into the program) by the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies for outstanding training in the field of clinical psychology. Following his training, he completed his internship at the Duke University Medical Center, focusing on both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

He then completed his post-doctoral training at the medical center as a clinical associate where he was both a researcher and clinician for a federally funded, multi-site study with Dr. Marsha Linehan’s lab at the University of Washington. During this time, he received extensive training in DBT for a variety of problem areas, including attending a 10-day intensive DBT training with his team from Duke and being involved in weekly consultation team meetings with very talented researchers and clinicians, including Dr. Linehan and her team at UW.

He left Duke following the completion of his post-doctoral fellowship and founded Durham DBT, Inc. Since that time, he has been engaged in providing empirically supported treatments for the community. In the past 2 years, he has also been employed at the Carolina House, a residential treatment facility for women with eating disorders, as their DBT therapist and group leader. He continues his work there as a consultant and group leader.

He has conducted trainings with Triangle Area DBT, runs an ongoing consultation team with the Easter Seals of North Carolina training their clinicians in the use of DBT with their very difficult population and has conducted other seminars for clinicians in the area. He has also been co-leading, with Dr. Martha Golden, the Durham group for DBT-U, a DBT group focused on the issues of college and graduate school students. He is actively seeking new patients.

Dr. Karen Erikson

UNR emphasizes research and scholarly training in clinical psychology while encouraging the development of clinical skills. While at the Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Erikson continued this training to develop expertise in using Dialectical Behavior Therapy and other empirically support methods for the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma and substance use issues.

Durham DBT is proud to welcome Dr. Karen Erikson to our team. She is currently accepting new patients. Please call her at (919) 308-8675 or email karen@durhamdbt.com to schedule an intake.
